Longevity Myths: Did People Really Live for Hundreds of Years?

So where did the stories of people living 500, 700, or even 900 years come from?
And why do remarkably similar longevity stories appear across cultures that developed thousands of miles apart?

What Is a Longevity Myth?
A longevity myth is a traditional story, religious account, legend, or historical claim in which individuals or groups are said to have lived extraordinarily long lives, often far beyond anything supported by modern demographic evidence.

Some studies have suggested a limit around 115–120 years, while other mathematical models argue that the maximum could eventually exceed 125 years if mortality continues to improve. The important point is that there is no scientific evidence supporting humans routinely living for several hundred years.
A 2019 analysis of human lifespan records found that Calment's 122-year record was unusual, but not statistically inexplicable. The Electronic Text Corpus of Sumerian Literature at the University of Oxford preserves the text of the list. According to the surviving translation, Alulim of Eridu ruled for 28,800 years, Alaljar for 36,000 years, and several other rulers are assigned similarly extraordinary reigns. The text states that eight kings in five cities ruled for a total of 241,200 years before the Flood.
And then comes the Flood.
That is not a minor detail.
The structure of the story divides Mesopotamian history into a mythical before and a historical-looking after.
After the Flood, reign lengths become much shorter, although several rulers are still assigned hundreds or thousands of years.
This gives us a huge clue about how the text should be read.
The Sumerian King List Was Not Simply an Ancient Census
The Sumerian King List is not generally treated by historians as a straightforward chronological record of actual reigns.
Its earliest forms date to ancient Mesopotamia, and later versions were revised and used in ways connected to political legitimacy. The World History Encyclopedia notes that the list blends history and myth and that its purpose was not simply to document the past but to construct a particular vision of kingship and succession.
That matters enormously.
The list presents kingship as something that descended from heaven.
Its early kings are almost superhuman.
The length of their reign reinforces the idea that the earliest rulers existed in a fundamentally different age—closer to the divine world than ordinary human life.
The oldest section therefore may be better understood as a mythic history of kingship rather than a literal list of men who physically ruled for thousands of years.
